DOWN HATHERLEY CHURCH GIFT DAY APPEAL 2009 Many thanks to everybody who contributed to this year’s Down Hatherley Church Gift Day appeal, which was launched at the “Open Church” morning on Saturday 20 June, when Fair Trade coffee and tea were served. The amount raised this year is £2000, the same as the “fabulous price”, the phrase which Jules Verne used in his classic novel “Around the World in 80 Days” (1873) to describe the sum Phileas Fogg paid for “a curious means of conveyance”! Down Hatherley PCC, despite representing a "Fair Trade
church", is not planning to spend these proceeds on an Indian
elephant, as Mr Fogg did in the book! It will be used instead to fund improvements to the churchyard and lych-gate area. Thank you very much to all those who showed such generosity in helping raise this amount, still, arguably in this recession, a “fabulous price” today!" -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
